Lest we forget
„Gegen das Vergessen“ (Lest We Forget) is an exhibition initiated by photographer Luigi Toscano. The portraits of Holocaust survivors were exhibited in Vienna along the Ringstrasse and had been defiled three times in May. They were first defiled with swastikas and several portraits were destroyed with a knife. Civil society stepped up to protect the displayed portraits. The damaged portraits were sewed up and repaired by many Viennese volunteers. I went there on 30 and 31 of May to see the repaired portraits and talk with the volunteers who came on their own, or belonged to different organisations like the Jewish Student Association, the Caritas, the Muslim Youth Austria, Artist and Actors collectives or the Austrian Boy Scouts.
